Smooth Fitness 9.45ST Treadmill Review

Smooth Fitness is a big player in the fitness equipment industry. They make and sell treadmills and elliptical trainers. One of their treadmills is the Smooth 9.45ST treadmill. Smooth Fitness touts this treadmill as a commercial-grade treadmill for you home. Generally speaking, I’d say the Smooth 9.45ST treadmill offers plenty of premium features, and doesn’t particularly lack in any one area, but you do pay for this. It’s priced north of $2,000.

Very Cool Feature – Hands Free Speed Control

You can control the speed without pushing buttons. All you do is wave your hand over motion sensors and you can reduce or increase your speed. This is a great feature, especially when running. You know what I’m talking about. When your running hard, having to push buttons breaks your gait and is a distraction.

Other Smooth 9.45ST Treadmill Features:

You get adequate power with the 3.0 hp continuous duty motor. For the price tag, I’d expect more power. However, more is not always necessary. The fact is this is one strong treadmill – being able to accommodate users up to 400 pounds (way above the industry norm).

Wireless Heart Rate Control

I do not like using pulse grip heart rate monitors. I don’t like hanging onto something while I walk or run. The reason is when you hang on to something, you’re not working out as hard.

The running space is 20 inches wide (pretty standard) by 60 inches long. I’d expect no less than 60 inches long for a treadmill costing more than $2,000. 60 inches will accommodate most users and gaits. Of course, there is a limit in length and 60 inches long is by far an industry standard – especially for treadmill priced above $1,000.

Adjustable Cushioning

This is an important premium feature. You don’t get adjustable cushioning on most treadmills. This is where Smooth Fitness is adding some real value to this 9.45ST treadmill. You can choose from 12 tread-deck cushion settings. This is a fantastic feature for people with joint issues. But it’s also a great way to increase intensity (softer impact = more intensity – think of running on sand) and prevent joint problems.

This treadmill comes with many other standard features you’d expect when paying $2,000 or more such as music system, computer, workout programs, bottle holder.

What’s Not Included with the Smooth 9.45ST?

Three items not included that you should be aware of:

  • iPod docking station
  • Folding capability
  • Television

If your budget is around $2,000 (note prices are as of the time this article was published) then the Smooth 9.45ST treadmill should be a contender in your treadmill shortlist (unless you want a folding treadmill or a TV)
